Epically Awesome Award of Epic Awesomeness: a reason to SMILE

 photo awesome-1_zps41b04e38.jpg

Hello there my pretties. So I am finally ready to address this epically awesome award passed on to me from Shelly over at Follow Me Home. 2.5 months late is better than never haha

The Rules for accepting this award are:
1. Accept the award! A huge thanks to Shelly! Thanks for thinking of me on this one =)
2. Post the award and link back to the person who gave it to you.
3. Give ten facts about yourself.
4. Award some other bloggers .

Now for 10 facts about me:
1. I was terrified of dogs until a few weeks after having Theodora melt my fear
2. I am so scared of needles that when I need a blood draw or shot at the very least I start to sweat and my heart goes crazy. At my worst I have passed out and lost my stomach.
3. I am a middle child and firmly believe in middle child syndrome.
4. I was a teenage runaway and high school drop out. I cleaned up my life very quickly with the help of loved ones and managed to get my high school diploma faster than if I would have stayed in school.
5. I played baseball since I was 4 and moved into softball when I grew out of peewees. Baseball is my happy place. I was a catcher and center fielder
6. I love listening to Glenn Miller, The Andrew Sisters, and Sinatra
7. I grew up listening to rap and moved to rock when I was introduced to No Doubt when I was 10. I immediately wanted to be like Gwen Stefani and she is still one of my heroes
8. I enjoy going to the shooting range
9. I have always had professional jobs and been in the medical field since I was 16... unless you count the one time I took a part time position in a sandwich shop just to see what it was like to have a normal kid job.
10. I was in a belly dancing class once and would love to pick it back up when I have time (9 months left for graduation)

When I think of blogs I follow that are epically awesome, I think of:
Kalandra Jane (I love everything she makes! Adorable hats)
Solanah (she has the greatest sense of style and always looks great)
Reyna (wonderful new mom who is still managing to sew beautiful pieces and go to school)
Debi (I am so inspired by her vintage sewing skills)
and
Kitty (*fingers crossed* that you have great news about the bar exam, and congrats on your wedding)

Thank you all for your epically awesome posts that inspire and entertain!

I was paper crafting the other day because I needed a small reminder to help me get through the hard days of these next 2 semesters. I framed "SMILE" with scrapbook paper I got at Hobby Lobby at 6/$1, frames from the Dollar Tree, and foam sheets I had lying around.
I love how it came out but can't decide just where to hang it on my wall hahaha

I have 3 dresses and 1 shirt to share with you all! Stay tuned

Oh! and before I forget... I got an A in my Coding class last semester! Hurray for straight As and keeping that 4.0

XOXOXOX

Liebster Blog Award - Thanks Cherie!

Wowwie! I was nominated for another Liebster Blog Award!
Photobucket
Thanks to Cherie over at The Sewing Lab!
She nominated my blog at the beginning of this month. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to the nomination. You know me, always burning the candle at both ends...
So I am finally sitting here and taking time to catch up on blogging
The rules are:
Link to the blogger who awarded you and follow their blog... CHECK
Blog about the award... CHECK
Give the award to 5 other bloggers, preferably with less than 200 followers...
Answer 11 questions asked by the the blogger who nominated you and give 11 questions to the bloggers you award...

So here are my questions as asked by Cherie:

1. What is your favorite project that you have made?
I think so far the most treasured piece I have made would have to be the Christmas dress I just finished. I adore everything about it! The style, the print, the fit, and the way I feel in it. But one piece that I hold dear to my heart would have to be the first dress I ever made because my Bempa inspired me to do so. I am attached to it because of the sweet memory it will always hold of when my Bempa said "Okay mija, it's nice that you can make skirts but I think it's time to challenge yourself with a dress. You can do it". It is far from perfect, but I wonder how long I would just keep making skirts had my Bempa not pushed me to better myself.

2. What was the most frustrating project you have tackled?
My most frustrating project would have to be an attempt at T-shirt recons, but I never tackled it and it never made it into the blogosphere. I only discovered I am terrible at recons. The most frustrating thing I have tackled will probably have to be learning to cook. I am still not as creative in the kitchen as I could hope to be but I have learned so much this last year and built up plenty of courage and enthusiasm for the art of cooking. I know if I keep challenging  myself I will only improve and I am no longer scared of some fails as I learn how to be a success. You have no idea how scared I really was when I decided I needed to finally suck it up and get in the kitchen. I am getting too old to always have people cooking for me haha. A girl can only live off of Top Ramen and Pop Tarts for so long.

3.What kinds of crafts do you do?
I sew and paint with puffy paint. I am trying to get better at hand embroidery and loom knitting and I am trying to find the time to learn to knit and crochet.

4. Where do you go for craft supplies?
I frequent Joanns and try to shop mostly from red tags unless there's a great sale. I also get alot of fabric from WalMart and check tehir clearance as well. Sure, plenty of the fabric is thin and crappy but if you really look you can find some cheap treasures. Once in a while I will get some from Hobby Lobby but it's usually too expensive for  my college girl budget. I get yarn from Michael's and WalMart and don't mind the cheap stuff since I am still just learning. I will occasionally find some cool yarn on clearance at Hobby Lobby. I buy buttons anywhere I spot one I can't go home without.

5. What is your favorite fabric to work with?
I have never tried anything outside of regular quilting fabric cotton weaves. I suppose it is safe to say it is my comfort zone. I know what to expect and how it will behave. I hope to be confident enough to try something slinkier soon.

6. How big is your fabric stash and do you have specific plans for all of it?  Some of it?
*GULP* I don't dare open the "fabric" closet until I am ready to organize it. I will need to do that in the New Year and before school starts back up mid-January. I promise o photograph the beast!

7. How many patterns are on your "to sew" list?
Oh dear! I have a spreadsheet saved with at least 50 that I own and at least 50 more I want to buy. I love patterns!!

8. Do you sew/craft for yourself or for other people more often?
I sew and craft mostly for myself right now. I make gifts for people for birthdays and Christmas but in general I'm currently a very selfish crafter. When I hole myself up for 16 weeks of studies I can't wait to bust out and reward myself with new things to make. Since I don;t have much time right now, most of my efforts go to myself.

9. Do you sell your items?
I have sold my items before but I don't live in a very crafty or artsy town so I would benefit more from Etsy. I started a shop but don't have time to run it so long as I am in school. But I do have friends and family who have bought from me.

10. How did you learn to sew?
When I was very young my grandma showed me how to sew by hand and I took to it quickly. I made doll and Barbie clothes mostly. The biggest project I made at that age by hand was a small quilted pillow with the word WELCOME embroidered on it. I gave it to my baby cousin when she was born (She is 18  now). I wish I had a picture of it. I am not sure if it is still in existence but I have the memory and that matters most.
When I really began to learn further was 2 years ago when I finally took to my sewing machine. That was when I began this blog and now thje rest in history.

11. What is your next project?
I am in the middle of making a simple fleece jacket.

Photobucket

Then I want to make a flannel dress and some gloves before getting back to school. Hopefully even more than that!

Well I may need to choose my 5 nominees at a later time... and develop my 11 questions for them too.
Until then...

p.s. these are the boots I bought with my Christmas money from Bempa. Aren't they cool!

We need to play catch up...

Hi everyone! Well we have some catching up to do. I am finished with finals and just found out i got A's in all 4 classes!! So awesome! I kept my 4.0. Time to celebrate...
I have 4 weeks of winter break!
Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!
So now I am preparing for my next "end-of-semester-tuition-reimbursement-tattoo". I will be getting a cartoon '57 Chevy Bel Air on my left lower arm.
Hoping to be able to get it before my winter break is over but it all depends on my tuition reimbursement.

I have washed and ironed 2 loads of fabric. I have never been happy to iron so much! For one, I was excited to finally use my new iron and two I was so happy to finally have time for crafting.

Of course I can't show you anything I am crafting that is a Christmas gift until it has been received. But as soon as I am done making my gifts I can start on my Christmas dress. Today I finally decided on Butterick B5603 View A in this holly material with red accents.

Photobucket

I have taken a few Xmas outfit pictures but dealing with all the issues of this past week I have forgotten to snap pix on most days.

"Hey Santa I may be bad but I'm so good at it". This shirt has enough green glitter to last a lifetime! I love it!

Photobucket

I paired it with my tan corduroy mini and my super thick knit winter leggings. They are just like a sweater for my legs. And they have adorable sprakly snowflakes all over.

How fun is this top! Happy Bunny as a "Gangster Wrapper". I did not get a full outfit picture when wearing this shirt (it was the night of my final) but I promise the rest was bland anyways. Just black tights with a burgandy corduroy mini.

I usually don't wear this shirt very much but I fell in love with it paired with this polka dot skirt.

This is a close-up of the candy cane heart rhinestone design.

and an artsy shot of my skirt =P

And lastly (for now) my snowman shirt. I love this outfit <3

Well that wraps up this post. I will follow up with a post with 2 recipes and another post where I answer the questions offered by Cherie over at The Sewing Lab who nominated me for The Liebster Blog Award. Hooray!! (Thanks again Cherie).

Here's a picture of a thick icicle from a drippy hose (no one knew it was even dripping before the freezing night haha). They say we may be in for rain mixed with snow tomorrow... Looks like Jack Frost may finally be here to bring winter.

hooray! i won a blog award

wowwie! a million thanks to Michele over at follow me home! She passed on the the Liebster Blog Award to me and 10 other blogs.

Okay. Here are the rules:

1. Please give your most honest (or creative) answers to my eleven questions.

2. Come up with 11 questions of your own. (Make them awesome, and if you get juicy answers, link back to me!)

3. Choose 11 of your favorite bloggers to pass the award onto..They must have FEWER than 200 followers. I love this part because you're finding and introducing new bloggers to the blogging universe and letting them know that they matter. How cool is that?
okay... here goes. Michele's 11 questions and my best answers:

1. What was the title of your very first post and what was it about?
oh dear, i have to look back lol... my title was intro to my short sewing history... and it was, well and introduction to my sewing history lol. i started blogging to chronicle my progress not only so i could share it with distant family and friends but to help others who were starting just the same. i wanted all my mistakes and accomplishments out there in hopes of inspiring other newbies

2. How did you come up with the name of your blog?
my original blog name was "My Road to Sewing" because it was stricly progress in that area. as i grew as a person and wanted to expand my horizons i changed it to "needles, eggshells, and hairspray". I am trying to learn to knit and will continue sewing (needles), decided it was time to be a big girl and learn how to cook (eggshells), and love hair and make-up and will attempt a few hair tutes one day (hairspray)

3. Do you have an underground blog or does everyone in your world know you write it?
everyone in my world knows... i am a leo after all hahaha i cant do anything without plastering it for all to see

4. Have you ever had to deal with negative comments?
thankfully i have not. but i do see negative comments on other blogs and i just dont understand people who leave them. who has that much time to go out of their way to be mean?

5. What is your worst pet peeve?
wow! what can i truly not stand... i have a few but the worst would be bad driving. i cannot stand when people drive wreckless or are not courteous. i am from southern california so road rage is in my blood and boy do i get worked up when i share the road with these people. but i keep all the hollering to my own car, i dont get crazy because i dont want to perpetuate the problem. i swear my drive home gives me high blood pressure hahaha so please everyone, remember to be courteous and drive like your precious baby is in the back seat

6. Do you think it's important to respond to every comment?
i do try to say soomething to every comment i receive, even if only a simple thank you. i want my readers to know that i appreciate their time and feedback. although i am really not sure how many commenters return to see a response

7. Do you blog for money? If yes, has it been worth it?
no i don't... i don't think i have enough readers for it to be worth it but i started this much more as a diary then an income. plus i blog so inconsistently with school and when life happens that i cant expect my readers to be consistent.

8. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. One day. What would you eat?
right off the bat i know dinner would be tacos! man i love me some tacos! ground beef with sour cream, cheese, tomato, cilantro, and onion! mmm mmm
breakfast is harder because its one of my fave meals of the day and i love so many brekkie dishes. i would have to go with cream cheese and fruit crepes. with hashbrowns! plenty of hashbrowns! and some extra-crunchy-about-to-crumble bacon.
for lunch i would take a vegemite cheese and avocado sandwich with some chips or french fries
and just before bed some freshly juiced fruits, veggies, and greens to feed my body's cells
wow! that question made me hungry

9. Who was your favorite teacher in school and why?
without question my favorite teacher was my first grade teacher mrs. schaefer. i may ramble on "why" because she really left a mark on my life. when i was very young she had come to my bempa's house to give me and my older brother swimming lessons and i still remember learning how to kick the water with her. she was Ms. Birdsaw when my brother was in her class but she got married the summer before i entered first grade. she had her wedding reception at the school hall. i was on campus that saturday for a baseball game. i had to go to the restroom and when i passed by the hall i was so taken aback by seeing my new teacher dancing away. i still remember the song that was playing: what i like about you by the romantics. every time i hear that song i am transported to that day. TEACHERS ARE PEOPLE WHO GET MARRIED AND DANCE TOO! what?!?! so i went into first grade already thinking she was the coolest of the cool far as teachers go.
my bempa used to suprise me and my cousins (we all went to the same school) with arby's for lunch. that was always a treat. and i always knew it was coming when the classroom phone rang and i heard mrs. schaefer ask for one with cheese.
she was an amazing person and great teacher!

10. At this moment in your life, are you content?
at this point i am content but i know there are bigger better things waiting for me. i have to stay focused on my school and once these 2 years pass by my dreams can start to take form. i can concentrate much more on the cooking and crafts that make me happy all while having a decent, simple job that pays well and i will be working from home. i will truly be happy when i am done with school. less stress and much more time for fun.

11. Do you see yourself blogging for the long haul?
i do. i enjoy blogging alot. it doesnt matter how many people actually read or even glance at my blog (although the more the merrier right). i do it because i truly enjoy it. i may not be the best at blogging all the time right now but when i have more free time to actually cook and craft then i will follow up much more with blogging about these things.

so now it is my turn to pay it forward. here are the eleven blogs which i follow and would like to pass the Liebster Blog award on to (in no particular order of course, they are all equally awesome):

phew! that took a while. i enjoy every blog that i read how could i narrow it down?? a few of the blogs i follow religiously don't have a # of followers so i had some trouble. plus most blogs i follow have more than 200... had no idea itd be that difficult.

and now for the harder part... time to come up withh 11 questions for the above winners...

1) what inspired you to start a blog?

2) you're stranded on a deserted island... cliche i know but always fun to imagine. so what craft supply , ingredient, and/or style product can you not live without? why?

3) how long did it take you to come up with a name for your blog? why did you choose what you finally decided on?

4) what has been your proudest moment that you have blogged about?

5) where did you learn your skill (cooking/crafting/style)? were you professionally taught? skills handed down in family? or just a natural all on your own (if so, lucky dog you)?

6) what was the very first completed project/dish you blogged about?

7) which celebrity or public figure (past or present) do you admire most and why?

8) who do you aim to reach with your blog?

9) how often do you read other people's blogs? which types of blogs get your attention?

10) what subjects do you avoid on your blog?

11) what is your favorite quote and why? (doesn't have to be official... can be something your kid said or you heard on TV... just something awesome)

so there you have it! congrats to those whom i chose and a HUGE thanks to Michele for choosing me and my blog <3
